Hello - I am Carole Ahmed, The Learning Maven. The name comes from my “Sparketypes™” - The Maven and The Nurturer. Jonathan Fields' Sparketypes give expression to work that most clearly brings a person joy and satisfaction. A Maven is someone who is driven to learn. A Nurturer is someone driven to give care. Being an educational therapist perfectly marries the work that sparks my soul.
I have long had a deep longing to help others who struggled to learn. Initially, this impulse expressed itself through volunteer tutoring. Wanting a greater impact, I became a paraeducator, working one-on-one with a 1st grade student diagnosed with diabetes. In the classroom, I was drawn again to helping the students who struggled. The impulse to help turned into a calling. I wanted to know about the root of the struggles and how to help transform students’ experience of school. I trained as a teacher, receiving my elementary education credential and M.A. in Teaching. My first student teaching experience in a K/1 class at a public Montessori school confirmed my commitment to working with students who need extra support in school.
The next step was to dig deeper still into the details of how students learn, how they take in and process information, and how to best close the gap between their abilities and unexpected difficulties at school. NILD Educational Therapy certification gave me that knowledge. As an NILD Educational Therapist, I work with students to discover how their brains are wired, and then design a targeted plan using research based techniques to address areas where improvements are most needed.
